Car at the 42nd annual K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Del Worsham (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.497 4.838 319.82
 (L) John Lawson (Lucas Oil '02 Firebird) 0.504 5.058 287.23
10:58 AM There were only two upsets in the first round of Top Fuel earlier. Worsham is away first and leads from wire to wire. Lawson drops a cylinder and has to watch the red car take the stripe.
 (W) Gary Densham (Force Racing '01 Mustang) 0.498 4.797 318.24
 (L) Cruz Pedregon (Advance Auto Parts '00 Firebi0.501 5.388 199.11
Our new National MPH Record Holder will be looking to spoil Cruz Pedregon's return to competition. Cruz makes it easier for him as he is up in smoke by mid-track after loosing a cylinder. Densham is clean and safe to the finish and will have lane choice over Worsham next round. There is a delay while they clean up a mess near the turnout at the end of the track.
 (W) John Force (Castrol GTX '01 Mustang) 0.497 4.806 324.20
 (L) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Skoal Racing '02 Camaro) 0.481 8.087 99.64
John Force has the black "X times" champion body back on the car today. The new white and green Castrol "Light" body will have to wait for Phoenix. TJ has good numbers down low and then has the tires kick loose before mid-track. Force has the race day tune up and makes a clean and smooth run to take the win.
 (W) Johnny Gray (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.496 4.871 314.68
 (L) Whit Bazemore (Matco Tools '02 Firebird) 0.517 5.178 270.10
Bazemore will have to wait until Phoenix to start his run to the championship. He is out and away on Gray until he starts to shake and smoke. Gray never looks back and makes his best run of the weekend.
 (W) Gary Scelzi (White Cap '02 Celica) 0.523 5.016 275.11
 (L) Tony Pedregon (Castrol Syntec '01 Mustang) 0.488 5.097 259.91
This is Scelzi's first round of eliminations in Funny Car in the White Cap Toyota. This one is ugly, as both cars have engine problems. Scelzi is dumping parts on the track and swerves over very near the wall. He pulls it back with fire coming out from underneath the body to take the win. Pedregon is away first and appeared to have the win in hand until just after the 660-lights. The header flames get very red and the car visibly slows and he too has smoke and parts out from underneath the car. We are down while they clean up both lanes near the turn out at the end of the track.
 (W) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing '02 Camaro) 0.523 4.825 313.95
 (L) Bob Bode (Arbee Products '00 Avenger) 0.563 11.533 71.84
The winner of this race will see Gary Scelzi next round. Capps makes a statement, running very near his qualifying times. Bode is too agressive with an .880 60-foot time and is up in smoke before the 330-foot lights. Capps will have lane choice.
 (W) Al Hofmann (K&N Filters '01 Firebird) 0.526 4.892 305.49
 (L) Jerry Toliver (WWF Racing '00 Firebird) 0.536 4.896 313.73
The K&N sponsor booth next door goes wild as Hofmann improves on his qualifying times to win a great side by side race. MOV: 0.0142 seconds (approximately 7 feet). Toliver shows that his qualifying times were the real thing and is almost a winner this round. Hofmann will give up lane choice to Gray next round.
 (W) Scotty Cannon (Oakley '02 Firebird) 0.515 4.872 311.41
 (L) Dean Skuza (Mopar Parts '02 Stratus R/T) 0.497 5.518 202.97
Team Schumacher will be one for three in first round as Cannon upholds the team spirit for a win. He too, improves on his qualifying times and will meet Force in the second round. Skuza is away first and has better numbers until the new Dodge FC kicks the tires before mid-track.

Car at the 42nd annual K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Johnny Gray (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.502 4.873 308.35
 (L) Al Hofmann (K&N Filters '01 Firebird) 0.503 5.307 206.92
12:48 PM Two cars with upsets in the first round will come to the line together. No joy for the K&N Filters sponsor suite this time. The cars leave together and stay together until near mid track, when Gray in the blue CSK car pulls ahead to take the stripe. Hofmann slows on the top end without any clear indication of a problem. It's another 4.87 for Gray, but looks to be expensive as we are down while they lay oil dry down near the turn out area.
 (W) Del Worsham (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.464 4.894 273.44
 (L) Gary Densham (Force Racing '01 Mustang) 0.597 5.095 242.23
Worsham was away first and never headed. Both cars have problems and shut off before the finish line lights. Gray will have team honors over Worsham in the next round.
 (W) John Force (Castrol GTX '01 Mustang) 0.524 4.809 322.88
 (L) Scotty Cannon (Oakley '02 Firebird) 0.500 5.154 242.54
Cannon and Force have a little "after you" on the starting line and then they both stage. Cannon is away first, but Force has the better numbers on down the track. It's all over by mid-track, when Cannon smokes the tires.
 (W) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing '02 Camaro) 0.504 4.832 316.60
 (L) Gary Scelzi (White Cap '02 Celica) 0.510 8.418 115.38
Scelzi is looking for another upset this round, but is up in smoke before the 330-foot lights. Capps is away first and has good numbers. He'll need to work a little harder on the tune up, as Force will have lane choice when they meet in the next round.

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Del Worsham (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.487 4.847 316.52
 (L) Johnny Gray (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.514 9.403 95.05
2:20 PM The two CSK Funny Cars will be the first pair of the round. It's all over early as Gray is up in smoke before the 330-foot lights. Worsham will be ready for the final with a clean end to end pass.
 (W) John Force (Castrol GTX '01 Mustang) 0.479 4.972 295.79
 (L) Ron Capps (Skoal Racing '02 Camaro) 0.468 5.202 214.28
They leave with similar RT's and run together to mid-track together. Force has his hands full as the Castrol FC drives hard toward the center line. He pulls it parallel and fights it all the way to the finish line. He has dropped a couple of cylinders and has his hands full. Capps gets a big surprise as he has a big bang and launches the burst panel on the body into the air in a number of small pieces. I hope all of you can experience a classic after the round interview.

Force will give up lane choice to Worsham in the final.

Funny Car at the 42nd annual K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) John Force (Castrol GTX '01 Mustang) 0.499 6.260 219.76
 (L) Del Worsham (CSK '01 Firebird) 0.474 6.642 243.68
3:51 PM The first big final of the 2002 season comes down to the leaders of the CSK and Castrol Teams. It's ugly, but Force chases Worsham until the red car strikes the tire shortly off the line. His luck doesn't last as he has to lift too. Force is on and off the throttle five different times as the car hikes the front wheels, smokes the tires, turns sideways, and smokes the tires again. Worsham tries to settle the car down and catch back up to the struggling Force. He starts to drop cylinders and runs out of race track before he can catch him. A wild and wooly finish to the weekend for the Funny Cars.
