Pomona, Friday: Dean Skuza, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge Stratus R/T
On his second pass of this weekendıs K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals at Pomona (Calif.), Skuza vaulted his new Dodge Stratus R/T to the sixth-qualified position with a 4.887-second elapsed time at 290.94 mph. Unfortunately for Skuza, a mechanical failure ignited a minor fire at the top end of the track.
"We burnt a piston, and it broke the fuel line," said Skuza, who was unhurt in the incident. "When you look at how the drive shaft was turning, we were on a great run. If you play out the graph, it was on a 4.79-second run, which would be our quickest ever. The car is so stable on track and itıs easy to drive. We can only go up from here."
Skuza made a semifinal round appearance at the season-closing Automobile Club of Southern California Nationals here at Pomona last November. The Brecksville, Ohio resident fell to Del Worsham.
