Historic Pomona Raceway at Fairplex in Pomona, the oldest venue on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing circuit and the only one to host three national events in 2001, has been home to NHRA's season opener since 1961 and to the season-ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals since 1984. Last year, Top Fuel rookie Darrell Russell duplicated mentor Gary Scelzi's 1997 feat of winning the season-opener in his first start. Russell took over the driving for retired Joe Amato. Bruce Sarver won Funny Car for the second time in his career in his second final round in Pomona in as many events. HOW TO GET THERE: The track is about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. From Interstate 10 east, exit Fairplex Drive or White Avenue and go north to the track. From I-10 west, exit Fairplex Drive and go north. The track is about one mile north of the interstate. Arrow Highway provides access from the north.
