12/19/2001

Don "the Snake" Prudhomme

Don "the Snake" Prudhomme, Parnelli Jones, Rick Mears, Les Richter, and Mickey Thompson have been nominated for the third annual Eagle One-Shav Glick Award, presented by the appearance care products company for distinguished achievement in motor racing by a Californian. This year's winner was NHRA founder Wally Parks.

The award, which honors the long-time motor sports writer of the Los Angeles Times, will be presented during pre-race ceremonies at the NASCAR NAPA Auto Parts 500, April 28, 2002, at California Speedway.

Prudhomme was a four-time NHRA Funny Car champion and now is a drag racing car owner. Jones won the Indy 500 in 1963 and was co-owner of cars that won the 1970 and 1971 Indy 500. Mears was a four-time winner of the Indy 500 and three-time CART national champion. Richter was president and overseer of Riverside International Raceway for 23 years and a leading force in the building of California Speedway. Thompson was a motor racing innovator and promoter.

Judges are: Mike Harris, Associated Press; Bill Center, San Diego Union-Tribune; Jim Short, Riverside Press-Enterprise; Doug Stokes, Irwindale Speedway; Mary Ellen- Wright Rana, Laguna Seca Raceway; John Zimmermann, Racer Magazine; and Wally Parks.
