Irwindale Dragstrip becomes NHRA Member Track
12/05/2001
The National Hot Rod Association announced that Irwindale Dragstrip has been sanctioned as an NHRA member track. The new eighth -mile dragstrip located at Irwindale Speedway adds to the list of the growing number of street-legal dragstrips in the Southern California area.
"The new drag strip at Irwindale will get a lot of young people off the streets and into a safe, well-controlled environment where they can see exactly what their cars can do without endangering themselves and others on public streets," said Charlie Neilsen, NHRA Division 7 director. "This is what NHRA was formed to do 50 years ago, and the concept is as valid now as it was then."
Stringent sound controls are in effect at each Irwindale Dragstrip event and all vehicles must pass multi-point safety checks before being allowed to make a pass on the eighth -mile track.
"Needless to say we are very pleased and proud to be an NHRA-sanctioned track," said Bob DeFazio, VP/COO of the Irwindale complex. "It's particularly satisfying to become an NHRA affiliate in that organization's 50th anniversary year. Irwindale is back in the drag racing business and we're thrilled to have brought it back."
The 2002 season at Irwindale Dragstrip will kick off in February with street legal drags on the first and third Sunday of each month and junior drags on the final Sunday of each month. The schedule also will feature a weeknight test-and-tune session the first and third Thursday of each month.
