5th Annual

Gateway International Raceway joined the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series with the Inaugural Sears Craftsman Nationals, and a stop by the Arch has been the midpoint of the season ever since. After two years as a three-day night event, the race will return to the traditional four-day format in 2001, with the addition of Pro Modifieds to the program. Last year, new E.T. records were set in Funny Car (Jerry Toliver, 4.883 seconds), Pro Stock (Ron Krisher 6.90 seconds), Pro Stock Bike (Angelle Savoie, 7.274 seconds) and Pro Stock Truck (Bob Panella (7.548 seconds). Top speed marks fell in Funny Car (John Force, 315.27 mph), Pro Stock (Rickie Smith, 199.20) and Pro Stock Truck (Randy Daniels, 178.57 mph). Toliver, Krisher and John Coughlin (Pro Stock Truck) won their first Sears Craftsman Nationals titles last year. Matt Hines (Pro Stock Bike) won for the second time in three seasons at Gateway. And Gary Scelzi (Top Fuel) takes a three-year win streak into the 2001 Sears Craftsman Nationals.
