NHRA Story
Champions crowned at Jegs Pacific SPORTSnationals
Saturday, April 18, 2009

FONTANA, Calif. (April 19, 2009) – Warm weather, high winds, and intense drag racing took over Auto Club Dragway at Auto Club Speedway as nearly 400 racers from across the nation competed for nine titles. Racers have battled since Friday to earn a chance to score the coveted NHRA Wally trophy at the Jegs NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N. Due to extreme weather conditions and in the best interest of safety, the decision was made to reduce racing to the eighth-mile late Sunday morning.

Lucas Oil driver Thomas Bayer from Fontana captured his second national event win of the year by defeating fellow Lucas Oil teammate Jack Freckman. It was a family affair in the Super Gas final, in which defending NHRA Division 7 Champ Hollis Colleasure took out son-in-law Brad Pierce.

Ed Sigmon took his '34 Chevy from the No. 8 qualifying position to the Comp winner’s circle. Sigmon beat Mike DePalma off the line and carried it through the eighth-mile for his long-awaited reunion with the Wally.

Mark Faul, the defending Jegs NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals Super Stock champion, found his way back to the final and grabbed the win when he defeated Jimmy DeFrank. The Stock crown went to Leo Glassbrenner, who received the win light as Clark Holroyd jumped at the Tree.

Super Street racer Michael Blodgett followed in his brother’s footsteps as he took the win light and the Wally trophy by ousting Brian Griffey. Matt Blodgett was victorious in the same category at last year’s event.

In other racing action, Jed Bourquin picked up his first national event win by powering his ’93 Daytona to the Top Sportsman victory.
