Every February since 1961, fans have flocked to Southern California for one of drag racing’s grandest traditions: the unveiling of new cars, drivers, teams, and sponsorships at the season opener, where teams hope to use the season kickoff as a springboard in their pursuit of a spot in the Countdown to the Championship at the fabled Pomona facility known for its outstanding traction, smooth surface, and record performances. This year’s event will feature a special tribute to legendary racer Don “the Snake” Prudhomme.
2010 recap: John Force got back into the winner’s circle after a 20-month drought and was joined by Larry Dixon and Mike Edwards in collecting season-opening wins during a nostalgia-filled weekend at the 50th annual event. The Funny Car victory ended the longest winless period of Force’s post-championship career, and the Top Fuel win by Dixon also marked a bit of a comeback; his team didn’t even qualify at the same race in 2009. Edwards’ win continued the dominance that the reigning Pro Stock world champ showed in closing out his successful 2009 campaign.
How to Get There: The track is about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. From Interstate 10 east, exit Fairplex Drive or White Avenue and go north; follow signs to Fairplex. From I-10 west, exit Fairplex Drive and go north. The track is about 1 mile north of the interstate. Arrow Highway provides access from the north.
