JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals celebrates 10th anniversary
Tuesday, March 19, 2013

The 10th annual JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals, the first of three JEGS SPORTSnationals in 2013, will take place March 22-24 at No Problem Raceway Park at Circuit Grand Bayou in Belle Rose, La. Designed to showcase NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors, the program features drivers in nine categories who will vie for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships.

“It’s hard to believe we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the event and the rebirth of the NHRA SPORTSnationals program,” said Eric Lotz, NHRA director of field marketing. “The JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals has become one of the most popular events to attend as well as compete at. It attracts racers from all across the country, from east to west and north to south. No Problem Raceway and their entire staff do an incredible job and truly live up to Southern hospitality. We also have to thank everyone from JEGS for all their support over the years not only with this event, but with all three JEGS SPORTSnationals.”

Former SPORTSnationals winners include Darrell Gwynn, Dale Armstrong, Ken Veney, Frank Manzo, Mike and Jeg Coughlin Jr., as well as Peter Biondo and Tommy Phillips, who both doubled up by winning in two classes at the same SPORTSnationals event.

The JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals boasts a guaranteed purse of more than $50,000; competing classes include Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street. The event will also include the division’s popular Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster and Orteq Top Sportsman categories as well as Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley-Davidson.

While the focus of the event will be on competition in the core NHRA classes, special attractions include Super Stock and Stock class eliminations, the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout, and the King of the Bayou for Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street.

NHRA reintroduced the SPORTSnationals 10 years ago at No Problem Raceway Park to rave reviews from racers and spectators. Prior to that, NHRA had hosted the SPORTSnationals from 1974 to 1986 at a trio of tracks, including Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. (1974-80; 1985-86), the old Houston Int'l Raceway (1981-82), and Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis (1983-84).

This season, NHRA will host three SPORTSnationals events: the JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals, the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals in Columbus in September; and the JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals in Las Vegas in October.
