Since 2009, the Andrea Pedregon Charity Foundation (APCF), created by the wife of two-time NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car world champ Tony, has tried to live by its motto, “A Spark of Hope.” Through events ranging from charity dinners to Locks of Love haircuts, from providing numerous cleft-lip surgeries to unique themed calendars, NHRA fans have continued to support APCF. Most recently, Andrea Pedregon created the Real Families of NHRA calendar, and fans continued their support. Their backing helped APCF reach a goal, and on June 6, she graciously announced a $50,000 donation to the Indiana University Foundation for children’s cancer research.
This donation was done in honor of a classmate of the Pedregons' son, Dezi. Since 2008, 6-year-old Henry Mullett has struggled with cancerous brain tumors and has had constant help from the hospital. This day, titled Hooray for Henry, featured a Cars theme and brought in the doctors who worked with Mullett. Pedregon started her day with a check presentation to Amber Kleopfer, senior associate director of development for the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, on the TV show IndyStyle.
To put a calendar together of this magnitude took the support of fans and many other committed people, and the drivers continued to give their time through restaurant autograph sessions, track walks, and photo shoots. Drivers who participated were Antron Brown, Doug Kalitta, Morgan Lucas, Bob Vandergriff Jr., Brandon Bernstein, Larry Dixon, and Del Worsham (Top Fuel); Jeff Arend, Matt Hagan, Jack Beckman, Bob Tasca III, Cruz Pedregon, Tony Pedregon, Robert Hight, John Force, Courtney Force, Ashley Force-Hood, Johnny Gray, Ron Capps, and Alexis DeJoria (Funny Car); Greg Anderson, Jason Line, Allen Johnson, Jeg Coughlin Jr., Erica Enders, Richie Stevens Jr., Shane Gray, and Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock); and Hector Arana Sr., Hector Arana Jr., Eddie Krawiec, and Matt and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle). Photographs were taken by Dan Davis Studios, layout was by Sholty Design, and printing was by Pengad Inc.
APCF will announce future projects in the coming months and knows that whatever is planned, NHRA fans will be there to be that spark of hope to those in need.
