A feature segment on NHRA Mello Yello Top Fuel champion Antron Brown is scheduled to air Friday at 8:50 a.m. ET on NBC’s Today show.
A crew including NBC news correspondent Craig D. Melvin and Today producer Chemene Pelzer spent the day with Brown and a film crew on Feb. 1. They arrived early at Don Schumacher Racing in Brownsburg, Ind., that day, and Brown schooled Melvin in “Top Fuel 101.” The Matco Tools team also let Melvin sit in the dragster while they started the 8,000-horsepower engine.
After a lunch break, the group hopped in Brown’s Toyota Sequoia and rode with him to pick up youngest son Adler, 4, from school and met with the rest of his family at their Pittsboro home.
Depending on possible breaking news, it is recommended that viewers set their recorders for the entire Today show.
The feature on Brown, the first African-American to win a major professional U.S. auto racing championship, is part of NBC’s coverage of Black History Month.
