Four heading to Pomona for National Championship

BAKERSFIELD – Blake Williams, Seth Polvadore, Dave Muller, and Scott Hewitt were crowned NHRA Pacific Division Summit Super Series Showdown champions and now advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship in November at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

The four were joined by Garrett Parsons in the High School class as trophy winners. They were led by Williams, of Chandler, Ariz., in the Super Pro class and Muller in Sportsman, who had to win Saturday’s division championship to advance to Sunday’s Summit Showdown, which matches the top points earners from each of the tracks in the division for the chance to advance to Pomona.

Williams, representing Firebird Int’l Raceway, drove his ’07 dragster to a 7.787-second pass at 167.70 mph to defeat Larry Hass, of Yorba Linda, Calif. Muller, who went deep into eliminations on Saturday, won on a double breakout against Ryan Mangus, of Rialto, Calif. Muller went 12.452 (12.47 dial) in his ’74 Camaro to Mangus’ 12.708 (12.74) in his ’71 Nova.

Williams’ teammate Polvadore, of Sun City, Ariz., outlasted Charles Sturdevant, of Draper, Utah, in the Pro class for the win and the trophy. Polvadore went 11.471, 114.10.

Local favorite Hewitt, of Bakersfield, raced to the win aboard his ’95 Suzuki in 8.676 seconds at 147.50 mph, beating Denny Alves, of El Cerrito, Calif.

Monroe, Utah, resident Parsons took his ’67 Cutlass all the way to the winner’s circle in High School after Gage Cameron, of Bakersfield, turned on the red-light to give Parsons the automatic win. Parsons ran it out to 12.217, 109.42.

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway took home the team championship for the second day in a row. The Las Vegas team was followed by Sacramento Raceway in second, with Speedworld Dragstrip and Auto Club Famoso Raceway tied for third.

Saturday

BAKERSFIELD – The team from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway took home the team championship and the trophy on Saturday from the Pacific Division NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, and four racers captured individual division championships.

The Strip accumulated 55 points to hold off host track Auto Club Famoso Raceway, which landed in second with 51 points followed by Sonoma in third at 48. Each track in the division is allowed to send up to three teams of racers to compete in both team and individual competition.

Leading the charge for Las Vegas was Doug Schumann, of Hesperia, Calif., in the Motorcycle class on his ’98 Suzuki. Schumann took on Doug Love, of Novato, Calif., running for Sonoma in the final. Schumann clocked in at 8.660 seconds at 148.18 mph to defeat Love and his ’01 Triumph.

Barona 1/8-Mile Drag Strip had a pair of winners in Zack Meziere and CW Hoefer. Meziere won in Super Pro with a lap of 7.742, 161.63 in his ’11 dragster. The Escondido, Calif., racer beat Marc Power, of Santa Rosa, Calif., who was running for Sonoma in his ’68 El Camino and clocked in at 10.267, 127.47. Hoefer, of Calimesa, Calif., took his ’91 Firebird to the winner’s circle, knocking out Johnny Burke from the Firebird Int’l Raceway team in Pro, running 12.308, 109.87. Burke, of Mesa, Ariz., left early with a red-light.

Representing Sacramento Raceway was Mike Spellman, who scored in Sportsman with his ’72 Challenger against Dwayne Opperman, of Napa, Calif. The Elk Grove, Calif., racer went 12.651 seconds on a 12.65 dial at 102.56 mph for the win against Opperman in his ’67 Camaro.

The four winners will advance to Sunday’s Summit Super Showdown competition, which pits the top points earners from each track in head-to-head competition. Sunday’s Summit Super Showdown winners will advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship in November at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, where they will face off with the winners from NHRA’s other six divisions for a purse of more than $100,000.

BAKERSFIELD – Auto Club Famoso Raceway will host the 2012 Pacific Division NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals Sept. 28-30. Top drivers from NHRA member tracks across the Pacific Division will compete in five classes for individual and team honors. The event will also feature the Summit Super Showdown, a race within a race where the top points-earning drivers from each track square off in head-to-head competition. Summit Super Showdown winners in the Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle categories will advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship against the winners from NHRA’s other six divisions at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona in November.


More than 500 participants will compete for cash awards of more than $30,000. Competitors in the High School class will earn trophies and savings bonds. Drivers who advance to the Summit Series National Championship in Pomona will race for a purse of more than $100,000.

The squad from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway took home the team title in 2011. Tony Trimp scored the championship in Super Pro. The Pro win went to Ryan Smith, and Chaysse Trimp, Tony’s son, won in the Sportsman class. Aaron Pine outlasted his fellow Motorcycle competitors.

Gates at Auto Club Famoso Raceway open at 7 a.m. each day. Time trials begin in the morning on Friday and continue throughout the day. On Saturday, final time trials are slated to begin at 8 a.m. The first round of eliminations for all NHRA Summit Racing competitors will begin at noon. On Sunday, the Summit Super Showdown eliminations continue at 9 a.m.

FRIDAY, Sept. 28 -- Gates open at 7 a.m. Time trials start in the morning and continue throughout the day.

PURSE: The NHRA Summit Racing Series competitors in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle will compete for cash awards of $30,600. The Summit Super Showdown winners in each category will advance to compete against winners from NHRA’s other six divisions at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in Pomona in November. They will each receive $3,500 for advancing to the National Championship, and the winner in each class in Pomona will receive an additional $5,000.

Participants in the High School eliminator compete for savings bonds and trophies.
