Worsham, Neff first to clinch Countdown playoff berths
Sunday, July 24, 2011

Del Worsham in Top Fuel and Mike Neff in Funny Car, who have led the Full Throttle points in their classes for much of the season, became the first two drivers to clinch spots in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Countdown to 1 playoffs as the result of racing at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

With their qualifying efforts Saturday, both assured their presence in the playoffs, which begin at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Charlotte Sept. 15-18.

“This season just continues to be amazing,” said Worsham. “Clinching a spot in the Countdown is a big deal. Now our goal is to clinch the No. 1 spot heading into the playoffs. If that happens, it would be amazing.”

On Sunday, Top Fuel winner Spencer Massey became the third driver and second in Top Fuel to clinch a berth.

The 16-race regular season of the Countdown to the Championship runs through the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil Aug. 31-Sept. 5 and sets 10-driver fields for the six-race Countdown to 1.
