Mike Dunn's Topeka NHRA Power Rankings
Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Shawn Langdon in Top Fuel, Ron Capps in Funny Car, and Mike Edwards in Pro Stock top ESPN2 analyst Mike Dunn’s Power Rankings heading into the NHRA Kansas Nationals in Topeka.

Here’s a look at his standings after seven events, listing position and improvement or decline from the previous ranking (NR = not previously ranked).

Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. Shawn Langdon Even
2. Antron Brown +2
3. Doug Kalitta -1
4. Brandon Bernstein NR
5. David Grubnic NR
Mike's notes: It seems crazy not to have the points leader, Tony Schumacher, in the rankings, but the math is not adding up right now. Other than a strong pass in the first round in Atlanta, he was mediocre at best. Team Kalitta has always done well here with 10 wins over the years, and "Grubby" is the defending champion.
Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. Ron Capps +2
2. Cruz Pedregon -1
3. Johnny Gray NR
4. Tim Wilkerson -2
5. Matt Hagan NR
Mike's notes: Johnny Gray probably should be at the top based on an outstanding performance in Atlanta, but he has been up and down this year on a race-to-race basis. I like Capps because he has three wins here and was in the final last year and only lost because he was late off the line.
Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. Mike Edwards +2
2. Jeg Coughlin Jr. Even
3. Shane Gray NR
4. Jason Line -4
5. Allen Johnson NR
Mike's notes: Shane Gray would not be in the rankings based on the performance numbers from Atlanta, but because he went to his third straight final (mostly on his driving), I think three is a good number for him, and he won here in 2011.
